Gegharkunik Province

Gegharkunik (Armenian Գեղարքունիք, in scientific transliteration Gełark'yownik ') is one of the provinces of Armenia.

Gegharkunik lies to the east of the country on the border with Azerbaijan. Roughly one quarter of the area of the province takes the Lake Sevan, a (940 km ² of 3655 km ²). The province has about 215 371 inhabitants ( 2002), capital is Gawar. The region is among the poorest in the country. In Gawar there is a school for mentally and physically disabled children, which strives to accommodate all affected children in the region as possible.

The exclave Arzwaschen (see map) is filled during the course of the conflict over Nagorno -Karabakh in Azerbaijan.

History

The district was in Urartian time probably to the Kingdom Ueliḫi that was subjected by the Nor Bayazet inscription by Rusa I..
