Geissorhiza

Geissorhiza radians

Geissorhiza are a genus of the family of Iris Family ( Iridaceae ), which is native to southern Africa. The flowers of the plant are sometimes spectacular coloration, they are but so far hardly in culture.

Description

Geissorhiza are perennial, herbaceous plants of small to medium sized. The serving as outlasting tubers are several layers - depending on the subgenus - either built completely concentric ( subgenus Weihea ) or imbricate lying scales composed ( subgenus Geissorhiza ) and are protected by a hard and woody to membranous, rarely fibrous outer layer.

The two or more leaves are usually easy hanging to erect, rarely lying, linear or sword-shaped and smooth surface. Take upwards in size from and can increasingly take on the character of bracts, then so are entirely scheidig. Occasionally, the midrib is highlighted.

The upright, cylindrical in cross-section stem is an ear of wheat, the inflorescence may have one or two flowered or are composed of numerous flowers that nod as buds and sit up until flowering. The radial symmetry and then either star - shaped or saucer to zygomorphic flowers have drooping stamens with erect, one-sided dust bags and a hanging pen. The flowers are colored differently from purple and pink to dark purple and blue, but also red, white or yellow occur, sometimes even in high-contrast combinations.

Dissemination

The genus is confined to the winter rainfall areas of southern Africa, most representatives of the southwestern Cape.

System

The genus now includes 84 species, divided by Peter Goldblatt in two subgenera, each with several sections. The related genus is the closest genus Hesperantha.
