Gemalto

The Gemalto N.V. is a Dutch corporation, which is engaged in the manufacture of chip and magnetic stripe cards such as SIM cards for cell phones, credit cards, electronic passports, health cards, corporate identity cards, debit cards, etc..

The 2006 merger of Gemplus ( Luxembourg ) and Axalto (Netherlands) formed company is the world's largest provider of smart cards, the global market share is about 50 %, but only 30% in Europe. In Germany the competitors Giesecke & Devrient, Safran Morpho and the Federal printing are stronger.

The company is active in more than 100 countries and employs approximately 10,000 employees, including 1,500 engineers and technicians. The annual budget for research and development is approximately 110 million euros.

Major shareholders were in 2007 with almost 15% share of the Texas Pacific Group, a US-based venture capital portfolio companies, and with 10% share of the Quandt family present, around 77 % of the shares are in free float (as of July 2013).

The stock is traded on several of the Euro Next and was included in the AEX index on 24 June 2013.

Year -2010- error

After the turn of the year 2009/2010 the chips of about 30 million German EC cards and credit cards stopped working intermittently. Debt was a programming error on the part of Gemalto, through which the chips were not able to correctly process the year 2010.
