General Artigas

General Artigas, a district in the department of Itapúa Paraguay, was founded in 1789 by the Governor Joaquín Alos y Brú under the name Cango Voví. Since 1942, the place is called General Artigas, in homage to the Uruguayan José Gervasio Artigas freedom fighter General, who spent the night on his journey from Posadas to Asunción here. A Ybyra Pyta plant still stands today in his memory at this point.

General Artigas has about 4,000 inhabitants and is surrounded by the neighboring districts of General Delgado, Coronel Bogado, Carmen del Paraná, Fram, San Pedro del Paraná, José Leandro Oviedo and the departments of Misiones and Caazapá.
