History

After the Carnation Revolution in 1974, the CGTP began to emerge as a single union. A minority within the CGTP fell since 1976 increasingly in conflict with the communist-oriented majority. She founded the Movimento platform Autónomo de Intervenção Sindical - Carta Aberta (English about: Independent Trade Union Movement - Open Letter ), with which she spoke out for independent unions instead of a single union for all workers in Portugal.

After the Constitution of Portugal had laid down from 1976 the principle of free trade unionism, 1977, the pluralism enshrined in the area of trade unions with the reformulated Trade Union Act. On the CGTP Congress in the same year it came then to split off. While the left wing of the Socialist trade unionists, the Catholic trade unionists and left trade union groups remained together with the communist-oriented majority in the CGTP, decided those who were close to the Socialist Party and the conservative Social Democratic Party, to establish their own trade union federation, the later UGT. The CGTP however, changed his name to Confederação Geral dos Trabalhadores Portugueses - Intersindical Nacional ( CGTP -IN) (English about: General merger of the Portuguese Workers - National Confederation of Trade Unions ).

On 28 and 29 October 1978, at the hall of cinema Cinema Lumiar, in the municipality of Lisbon Lumiar, took 47 individual unions ( eight of them with observer status), the Declaration of Principles and the Statutes of the União Geral de Trabalhadores - UGT to.
