The station Genève- Cornavin (in French often only Gare de Cornavin ) is the main station of the city of Geneva. With approximately 115,000 travelers every day he is one of the largest stations in Switzerland. SBB designate the station in writing Genève, Genève- Cornavin SNCF. On the blue station signs on the platform roofs, etc., is the SBB spelling Genève.

The station is located at the borders of the Geneva quarters Saint- Gervais, Les Grottes and Les Pâquis. The eponymous square outside the station, La Place de Cornavin, is a major hub of the Transports Publics Genevois, the municipal public transport. In addition to the buses stop here also trams. In the square there is a public parking garage.

History

The choice of location of the station fell into the second half of the 19th century, during the planning of the railway line Geneva -Lyon. After they had looked at several sites, it was decided to put the station on the then outskirts to protect the residents from the noise and exhaust gases and therefore the city will not cut into two parts.

As part of a three-day celebration of the track and the train station between the 16th and the 18th of March will be opened in 1858. During the time when the station is still in hands of the PLM, the station twice, in 1873 and 1893, extended. By fire on 11 February 1909, the station burns down to its stone foundation walls. A short time later, in 1912, assume the SBB train station. On 22 December 1925, these electrified the railway line Lausanne- Geneva.

Having decided on April 28, 1919 during the Paris Peace Conference to place the seat of the League of Nations in Geneva, broke all over the city of Geneva to numerous works. In this context, the Cornavin railway station was built by the architect Julien Flegenheimer with Skulputen by Jacques Probst in the gable. The main hall was opened in 1929, the remaining work was completed in 1931.

On the route leading to France the electrical equipment was taken on September 27, 1956 between Culoz and the train station. The track was but instead of Swiss standard with the French standard, 1500 V DC, electrified, what the SBB line between Geneva and La Plaine gave a specialty. Especially for a new car series in 1956 procured the two BDe 4/4 II, which were adapted to the French power. 1995, this vehicle series was replaced by five Bem 550. The vehicles will be used for regional transport, long-distance traffic on this route is handled by the SNCF. Since 1956, the station has two different line voltages and is therefore a system change the station. About one part of the station tracks the overhead line can be switched between the two systems. The majority of the tracks can also be fed only with one type of voltage, so for shunting the Ee 3/3 IV are used, which can run under both systems. The SNCF is planning the route to their AC variant convert 25,000 volts and 50 hertz, the exact Umstelldatum is not final yet (planning date 2013-14 ).

As part of the City Rail concept of the SBB train station is " attractive and modern service center " being turned into one. For this, the west wing of the station was renovated in 2004, the rest to be completed between 2009 and 2012. Currently home to the station over 50 shops, bars and restaurants as well as a police station.

Operating

As the terminus of two lines a maintenance site has also trained in Geneva. The depot was built from the very beginning for both railway companies, the LG (later PLM, SNCF) and the GM ( LFB later, OS, JS, SBB ). Where the tracks were clearly assigned to a company, however, it has been done thus in the sense of two depots under one roof. The depot is located in the direction of Lausanne on the west ( facing away from the lake side) of the distance in between the stabling of the SNCF. In the SBB during the time of the circle I was, the Custodian workshop officially getting the depot Lausanne assumed (there was no [ distance ] locomotive allocation Depot Geneva, exceptions were the direct current motor coaches ), but it was done relatively independently. The train personnel and the engineers of the SBB were always administered independently. While the SNCF withdrew as far as possible ( the retreat began with the electrification of their range ) and they only have a staff based in Geneva, he was the most important maintenance center for the intercity Neigezzüge for SBB and is now part of the Passenger Division.

Special

For announcements of the SBB rail personnel and identification of SBB trains, which usually continue to the airport, the train station is not explicitly listed. Note, however, that there is a double interpretation; the trains go first Geneva ( Cornavin / Hauptbahnhof ), and then only the airport. Whether the announcements and inscriptions " ... Genève Aéroport " now as " the train goes via ... via Geneva to the airport " or rather as " the train goes via ... to the Geneva airport (the stop at the Geneva train station is also covered ) " is to be interpreted is left to the passenger himself.
