Geniki Bank

The Geniki Bank is a commercial bank based in Athens. The former division bench of the Greek armed forces is a subsidiary of Piraeus Bank.

History

The bank was founded in 1937 by a pension fund of the Greek armed forces, the name was Γενική Τράπεζα της Ελλάδας ( engl. General Bank of Greece), from January 26, 1963 the Bank's shares on the Athens Stock Exchange are traded. In 2004, the Armed Forces separated from the majority holding, this was sold to Société Générale. The bank has 149 branches in Greece.

On 19 October 2012, the former majority shareholder, Société Générale announced the sale of the Piraeus Bank. The Geniki Bank remains as a brand.
