Gennadi Manakov

Gennadi Mikhailovich Manakov (Russian Геннадий Михайлович Манаков; born June 1, 1950 in Jefimowka, Orenburg Oblast, RSFSR, USSR ) is a retired Soviet cosmonaut.

Manakov was a test pilot in the Soviet Air Force, before in 1985 he was selected as a cosmonaut.

After 1990 he was substitute for the flight of Soyuz TMA -9 in February, he was nominated as commander of Soyuz TMA -10. On 1 August 1990 he started together with Gennady Strekalow Mir space station to spend about four months.

After Soyuz TM -15 was again substitute for the flight, he started on January 24, 1993 Soyuz TM -16 on its second flight. Together with Alexander Poleschtschuk he stayed this time nearly six months in space.

Manakov was also provided for a third space flight, which was scheduled on Soyuz TM -24 in July 1996 and was to take place with Pavel Vinogradov and the French cosmonaut Claudie Haigneré. First, however, the start was moved to the launch vehicle due to problems, then at Manakov cardiac disorders were found, so he and Vinogradov had to be replaced by their reserve people Valeri Korzun and Alexander Kaleri.

On 20 December 1996 Manakov retired.

Gennadi Manakov is married and has two children.
