Geoemydidae

Amboina Box Turtle ( Cuora amboinensis )

The Old World pond turtles ( Geoemydidae ) family differs in the structure of the carapace, and the skull of the New World pond turtles ( Emydidae ). By 1964, they were also expected to be them. Initially, they were separated as subfamily Batagurinae, later recognized as its own family, with the name Bataguridae was replaced for priority reasons by Geoemydidae. There are about 60 species, which are divided into two subfamilies Geoemydinae and Batagurinae, not to be confused with the name of the 1960s.

Dissemination

The vast majority of Old World pond turtles live in Asia and Europe, the "Old World ". There is one exception, however, the American tortoises ( Rhinoclemmys ) come from Central and northern South America. The remaining species are from Asia with Japan and the distribution area of Southeast Asia. European species are the Spanish water turtle ( Mauremys leprosa ), who lives in the Iberian Peninsula, as well as in the Maghreb and the Caspian turtle ( Mauremys caspica ), who lives on the southern Balkans, Turkey, the Caucasus and the Middle East to Turkmenistan.

Way of life

Terrapins lead an aquatic, bound to aquatic life. Smaller species usually inhabit small water bodies and are poorer swimmers. Large species such as the Batagur ( Batagur baska ) and the Callagur Turtle ( Callagur borneoensis ) swim better, live in rivers, go into the brackish water and walk along the shores to lay their eggs together with sea turtles on the beaches. The Asian and American tortoises, the temples and the turtle Cuora live strong terrestrial.

Nutrition

Young Old World pond turtles feed mostly carnivorous. With age often comes then added a plant food share, especially in the Asian and American tortoises and other large species.
