Geoff Capes

Geoff Capes (actually: Geoffrey Lewis Capes, born August 23, 1949 in Holbeach, Lincolnshire ) is a former British shot putter.

In the British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1970, he was starting for England in fourth.

He was eighth at the Indoor Athletics Championships in Grenoble in 1972 and retired at the Olympic Games in Munich in the qualifier. The following year he finished seventh at the European Indoor Championships in Rotterdam.

In 1974 he won at the British Commonwealth Games in 1974 in the shot put and placed fifth in the discus throw. A victory at the European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg was followed by a bronze medal at the European Athletics Championships in Rome and a silver medal at the European Indoor Championships in 1975.

In 1976 he won at the European Indoor Championships in Munich and was sixth at the Olympic Games in Montreal. At the European Indoor Championships 1977 in San Sebastián, he won a silver medal at the European Indoor Championships 1978 in Milan bronze.

After he had defended at the Commonwealth Games in 1978 his title in the shot put, he reached shortly roof at the European Championships in Prague, the final, in which he succeeded, however, not a valid shock. In 1979, he was in second at the European Indoor Championships in Vienna for the sixth time in a row on the podium at this event. At the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980 he finished fifth.

Seven times he was AAA champion in the open ( 1972, 1973, 1975-1979 ) and six times in the Hall ( 1971, 1972, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1978 ).

After his athletics career, he won the competition in 1983 and 1985 The World 's Strongest Men He is also a successful breeder of budgerigars.
