Georg Belwe
Georg Belwe ( born August 12, 1878 in Berlin, † 1954 in Ronneburg ) was a German typographer, typeface designer and teacher.
Life and work
He was born the son of Chancery Secretary Alexander Belwe in Berlin, where he initially was trained as a lithographer. His artistic training was Belwe at the teaching institute of the Royal Museum of Decorative Arts Berlin, including Emil Doepler. In 1900, he opened with Fritz Helmuth Ehmcke and Friedrich Wilhelm Kleukens the Steglitzer workshop. Many of his works were created for publishers such as Paul List, Reclam, Eugen Diederichs and Westermann.
He taught first at the School of Applied Arts in Berlin. In 1906 he was appointed professor at the Leipzig Academy for Graphic Arts and Printing Arts where Fritz Richter was one of his students. He has been dealing with artistic book design and advertising.
