The Georg- Gassmann -Stadion is a sports facility in Marburg. The stadium is located in the downtown district of Marburg Ockershausen, has a capacity of approximately 15,000 spectators and is the largest in Central Hesse.

Stadium

The Georg Gassmann stadium was completed in 1967. It was named after the former mayor of Marburg, Georg Gassmann. In addition to the turf sports fields, the stadium has a complete track and field facility with a modern synthetic track and diving boards. In 2001, the old plastic benches of the main grandstand, can find a seat on the approximately 2,000 spectators, replaced by seats that came from the Fritz -Walter-Stadion in Kaiserslautern. Until June 2007, the stadium was renovated and completely covered grandstand partially rebuilt. Since then located above the seats loge seats. In addition rooms were created for the sports department of the city of Marburg.

In addition to courts and sports halls

The sports complex is next to the big stadium of other sporting venues. Among other things, there are two football artificial turf, as well as an emerging artificial turf for hockey and two beach volleyball courts in the sports park, also known as Great sports field. Use

The Georg- Gassmann -Stadion is used by the football players of the Marburg Mercenaries. Football games outside of the younger youth sector are held rarely at the stadium. The exceptions were in the past years test matches against VfB Marburg higher class teams such as Eintracht Frankfurt and 1.FC Kaiserslautern in 2009 and 2010 and the final of the Hessen Cup of women. In addition, the stadium as well as the surrounding equipment for school sports is available.

In August 2009 took place with the Thorpe Cup for the first time a great track and field competition in the stadium. Several thousand spectators watched the countries struggle of tens of fighters and seven fighters from Germany and the United States. Due to the great audience popularity, the competition was also in August 2010, once again at the Georg- Gassmann -Stadion.

The finale of the Hessen Cup 2011 took place between the Wehen and KSV Hessen Kassel in the Georg- Gassmann -Stadion on May 10, 2011.
