Georg Keßler

Georg Kessler ( born September 23, 1932 in Saarbrücken ) is a German football coach and players. Because of his appearance and his manners he had the nickname " Sir ". He was Bondscoach ( Dutch national coach ), his greatest achievements were the national championship with AZ Alkmaar and two UEFA Cup finals.

Life

George Kessler was born in 1932 the son of a German father and a Dutch mother in Saarbrücken. In his early years he played in the Netherlands for Fortuna '54. Later he became a professor at the Sports University in Cologne. Georg Kessler lives in olefin in the Eifel.

Coaching career

In 1965, he joined the Dutch Football Association KNVB. The following year he was Bondscoach, so with chief responsibility for national coach of the Dutch national football team. The national team was led by Kessler to 1970 without having to qualify in 1968, the 1968 Olympics or World Cup 1970 for the 1966 World Cup, European Championship.

1970/71 he coached Sparta Rotterdam. The following season he won the Belgian club RSC Anderlecht double in league and cup. Kessler was controversial because of his authoritarian appearance and was released early during the 1972/73 season. He joined the PEC Zwolle in Holland and remained there until 1974.

Hertha BSC

In July 1974 Kessler joined his first engagement in Germany with Hertha BSC. He was the successor of Helmut Kronsbein and reached 1975, the vice-championship. In Kessler's third season Hertha reached the final of the DFB Cup for the first time. In Lower Saxony Hannover stadium the game against 1 FC Köln 1:1 after extra time ended. There was at that time not yet a penalty shootout to decide a cup final had to be repeated the first and only time. The second game took place two days later on 30 May 1977, ended 1-0 to Cologne.

SSW Innsbruck

After the cup final Kessler joined 1977/78 for a season to the SSW Innsbruck and reached the Cup final against VOEST Linz. The first leg ended 1-1, the second game brought Innsbruck Tivoli in the home the trophy with a 2-1 victory.

AZ Alkmaar

Then trained Kessler Dutch AZ Alkmaar, who was only three years earlier risen to the Eredivisie. Alkmaar reached under Kessler 's UEFA Cup final, won the Dutch championship and the KNVB Cup. In the UEFA Cup final Alkmaar defeated the English club Ipswich Town in the first leg 0-3, which could not be offset by the return leg victory with 4:2.

Bruges and Piraeus

In 1982 he moved to FC Bruges. where he reached the 5th and 3rd place in his two years. He then accepted an engagement at Olympiakos Piraeus, which failed. On 25 Gameday the engagement was terminated prematurely.

Cologne

Finally he joined in February 1986 at relegation-threatened first FC Cologne as a successor to Hannes Löhr. In the Bundesliga, he brought the team in 13th place and the UEFA Cup final against Real Madrid. Real Madrid won their home match at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium with 5:1. The return match took place because of previous crowd trouble in Cologne at the Olympiastadion Berlin. Cologne won 2-0 and it was unable to compensate for the loss of the first leg. The following season, Cologne was the seventh match after a 1-3 against Bayer Uerdingen on table rank 16 Kessler was fired and replaced by Christoph Daum.

End of career in Belgium

Georg Kessler went back to Belgium and had engagements with FC Antwerp (3rd place ), Standard Liege and the Netherlands at Fortuna Sittard, before he retired at the age of 60. In 1996, he jumped again at FC Antwerp. In the first season he reached the 6th rank, in the following year, however, the FC Antwerp dismounted in the second division.
