Georg Kükenthal

Georg Kükenthal ( born March 30, 1864 in White Rock, † October 20, 1955 in Coburg ) was a German theologian and botanist. His botanical author abbreviation is " KUek. "; earlier was also the abbreviation " Kükenth. " in use.

Life and work

Georg Kükenthal was born 1864 in White Rock, the son of a royal Prussian control inspector. His older brother was the zoologist Willy Kükenthal. He attended elementary school in White Rock and put 1882 on Stiftsgymnasium in Zeitz, the Abitur. This was followed by one year's service among 7 Württemberg Infantry Regiment No. 125

Theological career

Kükenthal studied from 1882 to 1885 Theology in Tübingen and Halle at Willibald Beyschlag. In Tübingen, he joined the country club Ghibellinia and Hall of Landsmannschaft Pomerania. After moving his parents to Coburg in 1885, he passed the first state examination theological and on 29 November the ordination as a ministry candidate from. In December 1886 he was parish administrator in Weitramsdorf and from December 1887 to March 1895 a Protestant pastor in Großwalbur and width- and from 1895 in Grub am Forst. 1907 was followed by the location of the city and upper pastor at St. Moritz in Coburg. 1914 Kükenthal was elected Superintendent of Coburg city and country. On July 8, 1920, finally followed by the election of the last General Superintendent and thus the highest minister of the independent national church of Coburg. After the Coburg State Church had joined the Bavarian Church on April 1, 1921 Kükenthal was, until his retirement on July 1, 1928 Director of the Evangelical Lutheran deanery Coburg.

Botanical career

Already in his time at the elementary school in White Rock Kükenthal was excited to work with plants. He has never studied botany, did, however, already in his first years as a country parson botanical knowledge at. His first scientific publication in the field of botany there in 1890.

In the botanical work he put an emphasis on the early Sedges ( Cyperaceae ), but then also dealt the complex genera Rubus, the willows ( Salix), the cinquefoils ( Potentilla ) and roses ( Rosa).

In 1913 he participated at the invitation of the Russian government in an excursion to Turkestan, which lasted three months. On a trip to Corsica in 1914, he was surprised by the outbreak of the First World War and interned three years by the French until he was allowed to return to Coburg in December 1917.

For the plant The plant kingdom by Adolf Engler Georg Kükenthal " Cyperaceous Caricoideae " wore in 1909, for the 1935-1936 edition was published he wrote " Cyperaceous Scirpoideae - Cypereae ". In 1930, he co-wrote with Hans Schack Woldemar contributions to the flora of Coburg and the surrounding area ( roses and brambles ). In old age he devoted himself also to the study of mosses. The Adam Bruckner (1862-1933) in 1902 established the found directory in the duchy of Coburg mosses with inclusion of peat moss he could expand by 38 species. Among his works published 143 there was a single bryological.

Georg Kükenthal owned a 45,000 documents extensive herbarium of sedges ( Carex ). It was the largest herbarium in the world for this species. This herbarium came to Berlin, where it was lost later by fire. The Natural Science Museum Coburg herbarium specimens have been preserved in other parts of his collection.

Kükenthal was married and has one daughter. His wife Martha helped also as a plant collector; of their collected specimen copies are in the herbarium Hamburgense ( HBG ) available.

Honors

1897 Kükenthal was appointed Corresponding Member of the "Royal Botanical Society of Ratisbon " and 1912 as director of the " Académie Internationale de Géographie Botanique " selected. From the University of Breslau, he received in 1913 in recognition of his great services to the study of the Cyperaceae an honorary doctorate. For his 90th birthday he was admitted in 1954 as a member of the Leopoldina and received the Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany awarded.
