Georg Ludolf Dissen

Georg Ludolf Dissen ( born December 17, 1784 in United snows in Göttingen; † September 21, 1837 in Göttingen ) was a German classical scholar.

Life

Dissen was the son of the pastor of big snows. At age 13, he was an orphan and could only be obtained by promoting friends a free spot in Schulpforta, where he was student from 1798 to 1804. Here he met the same age Friedrich Thiersch. After graduation Dissen went to the University of Göttingen, where he studied classical philology. From his teachers impressed him Christian Gottlob Heyne most. After the exam Dissen received his doctorate with a thesis " De Temporibus et modis verbi Graeci " and began his teaching at the University of Göttingen.

In his lectures he treated next to philological and philosophical themes. At this time he met August Boeckh, with whom he cultivated ties on matters of philology. 1812 followed Dissen a reputation associate professor at the University of Marburg. After only one and a half years, in the fall of 1813, he went with the same title back to Göttingen to work with Friedrich Gottlieb Welcker, Ernst Karl Friedrich Karl Otfried Müller and Wunderlich. Dissen 1817 was appointed full professor in 1832 councilor. In 1833 he was elected as a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen, 1834 he became a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. Recently he also belonged to the Board of the Department of Classical Philology. He died on September 21, 1837 unexpectedly at the age of 52 years.

Research and teaching

As an academic teacher Dissen was recognized by conscientiousness and methodical work. These features were also reflected in his three major works: the editions of Pindar, Tibullus and the speeches of Demosthenes. His text-critical method exerted influence on the development of his pupil Karl Lachmann, the founder of modern textual criticism. His Pindaredition was first released in August Boeckh complete edition (Leipzig 1811-1821 ) and later appeared also independently under the title " Pindari opera ex recensione Boeckhii " ( Gotha 1830). He took the edition of Tibullus ago after the work Heynes and his early deceased colleague Wunderlich. It was published under the title " Supplementum editionis Albii Tibulli Heynio - Wunderlichianae ed Lud. Dissen " in 1819 in Leipzig, as a separate issue ( with annotations Karl Lachmann ): " Alb. Tibulli carmina ex recens. C. Lachm. passim mutata explic. Lud. Dissen " (2 parts, Göttingen 1835). The Demosthenes speech for the wreath ( περὶ τοῦ Στεφάνου ) he issued after the issuance of Immanuel Bekker in 1837 in Göttingen.
