George Allman (natural historian)

George James Allman (* November 24, 1812 in Cork, Ireland, † November 24, 1898 in Ardmore, Parkstone, Dorset ) was an Irish biologist and university lecturer. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " GJAllman ".

Life

Allman visited the Royal Academical Institution, Belfast. For a time he studied law, but this was in favor of the study of natural history. In 1843 he received the medical doctor degree in Dublin. In 1844 he became professor of botany at the University of Dublin; dortiger his predecessor William Allman (1776-1846) had the same last name as him. Some twelve years later, he was " Regius Professor " of natural history at Edinburgh University. In 1870, he went early for health reasons to retire, which he spent in Dorsetshire; henceforth he devoted himself to gardening, his biggest hobby.

1854 Allman was elected as a member ( "Fellow" ) to the Royal Society, in 1873, the Royal Medal awarded him. In 1896 he was awarded the Linnean Medal of the Linnean Society of London. For several years he was president of the Linnaean Society.

Works

Allman has published numerous works. As his most important work applies its 1871-1872 published monograph on hydroids. This very detailed work Allman had enriched themselves with valuable drawings from his own hand.
