George Anderson (footballer born 1893)

George Walter Anderson (* 1893 in Cheetham, Manchester, † 1959) was an English footballer.

Career

Anderson won in adolescence with Salford Salford United the North League and the Haworth Cup before 1910 Professional at Bury FC in March. In the following months he came to Bury on a total of three appearances in the Football League First Division before joining for £ 50 fee for reigning champions Manchester United in September 1911. After a season in which he was mainly in reserve for use, he belonged in the following three seasons alongside Sandy Turnbull and Enoch West to the most consistent goal scorers on the team.

Until the termination of gaming operations in 1915, a year after the outbreak of the First World War, he scored 39 goals in 86 official matches, he scored two of his hits on April 2, 1915, a 2-0 win against Liverpool - a game which is later turned out to be the subject of a betting scandal. Several players from both teams had typed in exactly this Final. While the Manchester player Turnbull, Enoch and Arthur Whalley by the Football Association (FA) were locked, Anderson had refused to participate in a consultation game.

In February 1916 drew Anderson to hold without consulting with his club, to Ireland to play for Belfast United, a project which was, however, prevented by the FA. Two years later, he made a fresh sensation when three Manchester players on January 8, 1918 the Bureau of them reported that Anderson had tried to manipulate a game against Burnley on 29 December 1917. From club side then a dismissal was pronounced against Anderson. Just a few days thereafter, the reports that he had tried on 12 January 1918 manipulate a game between Everton and Blackpool, also in this case a lifelong space ban was imposed on him. From the English Football Association, he was finally banned for life on 20 February 1918 on 21 March, he was arrested because of allegations of betting manipulation and bribery, and eventually sentenced to eight months' imprisonment with hard labor for conspiracy to commit fraud.
