George Barker (benefactor)

George Barker (* 1776, † December 6, 1845 in Birmingham ) was an English lawyer and gardener. His botanical author abbreviation is " Barker ".

Life

George Barker had a nursery in Springfield, England. He devoted himself particularly to the culture of Mexican orchids, whose import he sent out his own plant hunters. In 1839 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. He founded the Natural History Club in Birmingham ( Natural History and Philosophical Society of Birmingham )

According to him, the orchid genus Barkeria Knowles & Westc. named.
