George Bernard Flahiff

George Bernard Cardinal Flahiff, CC, COD ( born October 26, 1905 in Paris, Ontario; † August 22, 1989 in Toronto ) was a Canadian clergyman, Archbishop of Winnipeg and cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

George Bernard Flahiff received his theological and philosophical training in Toronto, Strasbourg and Paris. He joined in 1927 the Congregation of St. Basil priest and received on August 17, 1930, the sacrament of Holy Orders. After further studies and activities in pastoral ministry, he worked from 1935 to 1954 as a lecturer and researcher at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies in Toronto, whose secretary he was in charge from 1940 until 1954. In 1947 he published an essay on the still quoted today crusade criticism of Radulfus Niger. Hanna Krause wrote in her dissertation: " He has made ​​the first to awaken the scientific interest for Niger and his writings, and encourages further research, which he himself could no longer afford due to his elevation to Bishop of Winnipeg / Canada ... ".

In 1948 he became a member of the general chapter of his order from 1954 to 1960, he performed the duties of the Superior General of the Congregation.

1960 he was appointed by Pope John XXIII. Archbishop of Winnipeg. The bishop ordained by George Bernard Flahiff James Charles Cardinal McGuigan. In the years 1962 to 1965, he took part in the Second Vatican Council. Pope Paul VI. took him on 28 April 1969 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria della Salute a Primavalle to the College of Cardinals. George Bernard Flahiff participated in two conclaves of 1978. He died on August 22, 1989 in Toronto, and was buried in the crypt of Marie cemetery priest of Winnipeg.

Award

1974 Archbishop George Bernard Flahiff was awarded the highest medal for Kanda's civilians and included as a " Companion " to the Order of Canada. This Canadian medal is only awarded for greatest contribution to Canada and humanity at national or international level.
