George Clerk (diplomat)

Rt.Hon.Sir George Russell Clerk CB, CMG (* 1874, † 1951) was a British diplomat.

Life

George Russell Clerk was a member of the Privy Council, Knight Commander Order of St Michael and St George and the Order of the Bath. He joined the Foreign Service in 1899 and was promoted on March 21, 1901 Secretary of third class. From 1903 to 1904 George Russell Clerk was Consul General in Addis Ababa. In 1906 he was chargé d'affaires in the kingdom of Abyssinia. In 1907 he was an assistant in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. In 1910 he was chargé d'affaires in Constantinople Opel. In 1919 he was private secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs. From 1919 to 1926 he was British Minister in Prague. From 1926 to 1933 Ambassador was in Ankara.

In 1933 he was ambassador in Brussels. From 1934 to 1937 he was ambassador in Paris. 1937 Clerk has been retired.
