George-Daniel de Monfreid

George -Daniel de Monfreid called Géo de Monfreid, ( born March 14, 1856 in New York; † November 26, 1929 in Corneilla -de- Conflent department Pyrénées -Orientales ) was a French art collector and painter.

Life

Monfreid came to the United States to the world, but spent virtually his entire childhood and youth in Southern France ( Aude department) region, where his parents herstammten. There he could always admire artists who painted pleine aire - and that's why he also chose early on to also become a painter.

He went to Paris and became a student at the Académie Julian. During this time he made, inter alia, acquaintance with Paul Gauguin, Aristide Maillol, Victor Segalen and Paul Verlaine.

Together with his friend and colleague Gustave Fayet Monfreid was the first to recognize the art of Gauguin and his images also collected. Monfreid is also regarded as the first biographer of Gauguin.

With 73 years George -Daniel de Monfreid died on 26 November 1929 in Corneilla -de- Conflent and found his final resting place.

His son is the writer Henri de Monfreid ( 1879-1974 ).
