George Darley

George Darley (* 1795 in Dublin, † November 23, 1846 in London) was an Irish poet, writer and literary critic. He was little appreciated by his contemporaries and was long considered difficult to read. However, writers of the 20th century admire his dream worlds and the symbolism he uses in his unfinished lyric epic " Nepenthe " (1835 ) as a stylistic element to awaken the inner consciousness.

Career

Darley attended Trinity College in Dublin and decided after the completion of his training for a literary career. He went to London in 1820 and published in 1822 his first poem, " Errors of Ecstasie ". He also wrote under the pseudonym of John Lacy for literary London Magazine. In this magazine appeared his best story, " Lilian of the Vale ". It was followed by other publications, including the 1827 poem " Sylvia, or The May Queen ". After some time he moved to the Athenaeum magazine, where he proved to be astute literary critic.

Darley was also active as a playwright, studied pieces of old English and published in 1840 works of Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher. His creations were so imbued with the spirit of the 17th century that his poem was "It is not beauty I desire" included in the first edition of the Golden Treasury by Francis Turner Palgrave as poetry by an unknown poet from this period.

In the literary field Darley was the recognition largely failed, he showed remarkable talent, however, as a mathematician and published several successful textbooks.
