George Gleig (priest)

George Robert Gleig [ spr. Glegg ] ( born April 20, 1796 in Stirling, Scotland, † July 9, 1888 ) was a Scottish writer and soldier.

Gleig was the son of Primate George Gleig and his wife Janet Hamilton. After completing his schooling in Glasgow he began to study at Balliol College ( University of Oxford). As at June 21, 1813 Wellington won his first victory in Spain ( Battle of Vitoria ), Gleig broke off his studies and joined in the same year the army.

The following year Gleig fought in the British -American war in the U.S. and was at the storming of Washington, DC severely wounded. He returned to Oxford in 1819 where she completed successfully graduated with the titles " BA" and "MA" In the same year he also married.

1820 Gleig was ordained by the Anglican Church in 1822 and got a job as a curate ( Quasi Parish ) in Ash (Kent ); later he was appointed rector of Ivychurch ( Kent). 1844 he was appointed chaplain at Chelseahospital. Had been appointed as Gleig 1846 Chaplain-General of the army, an educational plan for the soldiers was drawn up under its auspices. The highlight of his career he reached with his appointment as inspector general of military schools; associated with it were benefice of St. Paul.

1875 put Gleig down all his offices, and he withdrew into retirement. For the rest of his life he worked as a writer; what he had started with his autobiographical work "The subaltern " in 1825.
