George Guţiu

Gheorghe Guţiu ( born March 30, 1924 in Vaideiu in Mureş county, † May 8, 2011 in Cluj ) was a Romanian Greek- Catholic Bishop of Cluj- Gherla with the personal title of archbishop. He spent 14 years in prison.

Life

Gheorghe Guţiu studied at the Romanian Academy of Theology " Sfânta Treime " in Blasendorf and received on 8 December 1948, the ordination by the Roman Catholic Archbishop and Metropolitan of Bucharest, Alexandru Theodor Cisar. This happened a week after the official ban on the Romanian Greek- Catholic Church and the arrest of all the Greek-Catholic bishops in Romania.

On 30 January 1951 he was arrested and tried by the Home Office in Bucharest under indictment. On February 20, 1952, he was sentenced to life-long labor. On August 4, 1964, under a Regulation pardon all political prisoners by the communist regime to "20 Anniversary of the liberation from fascism " fired. He was then employed until 1986 as an economist in a government company in St. Martin.

On March 14, 1990, he was elected by the Holy Synod as Bishop of Cluj- Gherla. Pope John Paul II confirmed the election on June 17 of that year. The Episcopal ordination on June 17 of the same year gave him the Major Archbishop of Fagaras and Alba Iulia, Alexandru Todea; Were co-consecrators Ioan Ploscaru, Bishop of Lugoj and Lucian Mureşan, Bishop of Maramureş.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on 20 July 1994, in a personal capacity in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the defense of Christianity during the communist persecution, Archbishop ad. In 2000 he was awarded the National Order of Merit " Pentru Merit " by the Romanian President Emil Constantinescu.

On 18 July 2002, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation age-related.
