George I of Brieg

George I of Brieg (also George I of Legnica and Brzeg; * 1481/1483, † 1521) was Duke of Legnica and Brzeg. He came from a branch of the Silesian Piast Legnica.

Life

His parents were Duke Friedrich I († 1488 ) and Ludmilla († 1503), a daughter of the Bohemian King George of Podiebrad.

After the early death of her father George and his older brothers John II and Frederick II grew up under the tutelage of her mother, who exercised the regency to 1499. As the oldest brother John died in 1495, took over in 1499 the second son Frederick II inherited the management of areas. After 1505 George became the age of majority, he reigned independently the Brieger share, which also belonged Lüben, while Frederick II kept the Duchy of Liegnitz.

1516 Georg married Anna († 1550), a daughter of the Duke Bogusław X of Pomerania. Since the marriage remained childless, inherited George's brother Frederick II the Duchy Brieg, he again united with Legnica. George's widow Anna of Pomerania was given as dowry Lüben, which she kept until her death in 1550.
