George Kempf

George Rushing Kempf ( born August 12, 1944 in Globe, Arizona; † July 16, 2002 in Lawrence, Kansas) was an American mathematician who dealt with algebraic geometry and representation theory of algebraic groups.

Kempf studied at Johns Hopkins University with a bachelor's degree and at the University of Illinois at Urbana -Champaign and was in 1970 at Steven Kleiman at Columbia University PhD (The singularity of Certain varieties in the Jacobean of a curve ). In his thesis he analyzed the singularities of subvarieties of the Jacobian variety of an algebraic curve by r -fold adding the curve to itself in the Jacobian variety ( Riemann -Kempf singularity theorem).

He was a professor at Johns Hopkins University. There he donated in honor of the Kempf Memorial Lectures.
