George Eric Lamming CHB (* 1927 in Carrington Village, St. Michael ) is a writer from Barbados, who described as the main theme in his novels the meeting of colored people to Europe.

Life

After schooling Lamming graduated and then worked as a teacher in Barbados and then in Venezuela, before he went to Britain in 1950. There he worked as a laborer in a factory working and moderator of a literature program on the radio program of the BBC for the West Indies.

Starting with his debut novel, In the Castle of My Skin (1953 ), he explored the experiences of immigrants from the West Indies in a complex and highly structured manner, and put this on in The Emigrants (1954 ), in 1956 under the title With the Gulf Stream appeared in a German translation of Janheinz Jahn. However, the ignorance of the most reader on the background and the special linguistic sociolects his first novels meant that these were only little attention. To provide financial support for his literary work, he received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1955 and was one of a number of young native of the Caribbean authors who immigrated to Britain as CLR James, VS Naipaul and Samuel Selvon.

In Season of Adventures (1960 ), which was published in 1962 as a time of adventure in German translation, he is thus his own dilemma as an artist dar. 1967 he was appointed Writer in Residence and Lecturer at the University of the West Indies ( UWI ) and taught at the city's Creative Arts Centre of the Faculty of Education. Furthermore, he was occasionally visiting professor at the University of Texas at Austin, University of Pennsylvania and Brown University as well as a university lecturer in Australia, Denmark and Tanzania.

The 1972 published novel Natives of My Person with its archaic vocabulary and its mythical roots is probably his tour de force.

For his contributions to the literature and culture of his native country and the Caribbean 1987 he was appointed a Companion of Honour of the Order of Barbados and in 1998 was honored with the Order of the Caribbean Community. 2011 honored him as the Cuban Union of Artists of Unión Nacional de Artistas de Cuba y Escritores ( UNEAC ) with the first verliehenden Hibiscus Award of the Caribbean for his life's work.
