George McManus

George McManus ( born January 23, 1884 in St. Louis, Missouri, † October 22, 1954 in Santa Monica, California ) was an American cartoonist and comic book artist. He became famous for the comic strip Bringing Up Father.

Life and work

McManus, son of Irish immigrants, left at the age of 15 years, the school and worked for the daily newspaper Saint Louis Republic, which also published his first comic titled Alma and Oliver. In 1904, he moved to New York, where he worked for the New York World, for which he drew several serial stories. From 1912 McManus drew for the newspaper The New York American, who had recruited him. His biggest success was the Daily strip Bringing Up Father, which he drew from 1913 until his death in 1954 and its main male character he played in some real films. This comic about a nouveau riche Irish immigrant who was translated to McManus ' lifetime in 27 languages ​​, brought, according to McManus, two years before his death, twelve million U.S. dollars.

McManus was buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, New York.
