George Monro (mayor)

George Monro (* 1801 in Scotland; † January 5, 1878 in Toronto ) was a Canadian businessman, politician and mayor of Toronto 6.

George Monro emigrated with his parents to Niagara-on -the-Lake and moved to York in 1814, the then Toronto, from. Together with his brother he began in a grocery store and went to work later as a wholesaler and importer of British and Indian goods independently. He was elected to the City Council in 1834 and served from January 1841 to January 1842 as mayor of Toronto. During the Upper Canadian Revolution, he was captain of the militia. Monro applied for the Legislative Assembly, but failed. George Monro belonged to a church and Bible Society and was later director of a bank and an insurance company. He remained with the exception of 1836-1845 City Council. Monroe retired in 1856 from active politics.

George Monro married around 1822 Christine Fisher from Montreal and had two sons and four daughters with her.
