George Thomas (soldier)

George Thomas (* 1756 in Roscrea (Ireland ); † August 22, 1802 ) was a British mercenary and known as "Irish Raja ".

Life

George Thomas was born about 1756 in Ireland in poor conditions. In Madras, he deserted from the Royal Navy, went to Delhi and entered the service of Begum Samru. He later moved to Appa Rao, a Marathenführer and went on to conquer a separate kingdom in Hansi in Haryana region. His attempts to conquer the Punjab failed. Thomas was eventually replaced by General Pierre Cuillier -Perron, commander of the army Gwalior, defeated and captured. He died on August 22, 1802 on the Ganges.
