George Town, Tasmania

Georgetown is a city on the northern coast of the Australian state of Tasmania. The small town with 4,304 inhabitants ( 2011) located on the eastern shore of the Tamar River which flows close to the Bass Strait.

Georgetown the end point of the high-voltage direct current transmission link is bass.

History

With the landing of Lieutenant Colonel William Paterson began in 1804 at this point, which he called Port Dalrymple, the European colonization Nordtasmaniens. Georgetown, making it the third oldest city in Australia. The place bills itself as the oldest town ( ' town' ) in Australia. A short time later moved Paterson about 45 km further upriver and founded Launceston. In 1811 the governor of the colony of Lachlan Macquarie decided back in the original location to found a city and this after the British King George III. to appoint.

Rünf kilometers outside of the city is the first aluminum smelter in the southern hemisphere from 1955, the Bell Bay aluminum smelter, which is operated by Rio Tinto Alcan.
