George Volkoff

George Michael Volkoff ( born February 23, 1914 in Moscow, † April 24, 2000 in Vancouver ) was a Canadian physicist.

Along with J. Robert Oppenheimer, he said in 1939 requires the existence of neutron stars before they were discovered. In this work he also described an upper bound on the mass of stellar objects of degenerate neutron matter ( neutron star ) are ( Tolman -Oppenheimer - Volkoff limit). It is analogous to the Chandrasekhar limit for white dwarfs.

Volkoff was a professor at the University of British Columbia.
