George Walter Prothero

Sir George Walter Prothero ( born October 14, 1848 in Wiltshire, † July 10, 1922 ) was a British historian.

Prothero attended Eton College and studied from 1868 at the University of Cambridge (King 's College ) Classical languages ​​and in 1872 a Fellow of King 's College. He then spent two years at the University of Bonn and at Eton College, before returning to Cambridge in 1874. He was there from 1876 Lecturer in history. In 1894 he became the first Professor of Modern History at the University of Edinburgh, which he remained until 1899, when he moved to London to issue the successor of his brother Rowland Prothero (Lord Ernle ) the Quarterly Review. In World War I he was historical consultant of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and participated in the Paris Peace Conference of 1919.

With Adolphus William Ward and Stanley Mordaunt Leathes he gave from 1901 to 1912, the The Cambridge Modern History out. He was also editor of the Cambridge Modern History Series. Prothero was president of the Royal Historical Society.
