George Whetstone
George Whetstone ( baptized in 1550, † 1587 ) was an English playwright and author.
Life
George Whetstone was born into a wealthy family from Barnack to Stamford. However, he only received a small inheritance, which was soon exhausted. In 1572 he entered the military service and served in a regiment in the Netherlands. There he met George Gascoigne and Thomas Churchyard (* 1520, † 1604).
In 1576 he published his first work, coat of Regards, adopted from the Italian prose and verse narratives. He accompanied Sir Humphrey Gilbert on his expedition ( 1578/79 ) and held in 1580 in Italy. In 1585 he re-entered the military service and participated in the Battle of Zutphen.
He was a leading literary critic of the Elizabethan period.
