Georges Henri Rivière

Georges- Henri Rivière ( born June 5, 1897 in Paris, † March 24, 1985 in Louveciennes ) was a French anthropologist and museologist. He has implemented new ideas in museum practice in France and is considered the founder of eco-museums.

Life

Georges- Henri Rivière studied until 1925 at the Paris Conservatory and worked as a pianist in Paris in the 1920s. Through his friendship with musicians such as Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and Josephine Baker, exposure to visual artists of that time he began to be interested in the art and culture of non-European peoples. His ethnological studies at the École du Louvre, he finished 1928. Along with Georges Bataille, he founded the journal Documents and was in 1929-1930 the co-editor and editor. By this time, created new ideas and concepts for the transformation of museums. In the 1930s, Georges Henri Rivière participated in numerous exhibitions. He is the founder of Parisian folklore museum ATP ( Musée National des Arts et Traditions Populaires ), which in 1937 emerged from the Musée d' founded in 1878 ethnography of Trocadéro. From 1948 to 1965 Rivière initiated this museum as Director General. From 1970 to 1982 Rivière worked as Professor of Museum Studies at the University of Paris IV.
