Georghios Pikis

Georgios pikis (Greek Γεώργιος Πίκης, often Georghios pikis transcribed, born January 22, 1939 in Larnaca ) is a lawyer from Cyprus. He served from 1981 as a judge and since 1995 as President of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Cyprus as well as from 2003 to 2009 as a judge at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

Life

Georgios pikis was born in 1939 in Larnaca and completed his legal education at the University of London, in 1960 he earned an LL.B. degree. After a year later received his certification as a Barrister -at-Law by the English Bar Gray's Inn, he practiced in his native country until 1966 as a lawyer. From 1966 to 1972, he then served as a judge and from 1972 to 1981 as president of a district court in the Republic of Cyprus.

From 1981, he worked as a judge of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Cyprus, which he headed as president from 1995. In February 2003 he was elected judge of the newly created International Criminal Court, where he served for six-year terms from 2003 to 2009. His election was carried out on the proposal list A for candidates with proven expertise in the field of criminal law and criminal procedure law. On the Court, he was a member of the Appeals Division.

In addition, Georgios pikis functioned in the years 1993 and 1997 as an ad hoc judge at the European Court of Human Rights. In addition to his judicial work, he was from 1996 to 1998 served as a member of the UN Committee against Torture.
