Georgi Markov

Georgi Ivanov Markov ( Bulgarian Георги Иванов Марков; born March 1, 1929 in Sofia, † September 11, 1978 in London, United Kingdom) was a Bulgarian writer.

Outside of Bulgaria, he is mainly known for its spectacular circumstances of his death.

Life

Markov emigrated in 1969 from Bulgaria to Italy, where his brother lived, and later worked in London as a journalist. He publicly criticized the Communist leadership of his home country.

He was born on September 7, 1978 at the Waterloo Bridge in London victims of the umbrella assassination by an impregnated small ball, which was at its peak, stabbed him with an umbrella in the right calf. The ball made ​​of a platinum -iridium alloy had a diameter of 1.52 mm and was prepared with about 40 micrograms of the highly toxic substance ricin. Markov died three days after the assassination with fever and hypotension due to heart failure.
