The Georgian Technical University - GTU (Georgian საქართველოს ტექნიკური უნივერსიტეტი - სტუ; Sakartwelos Teknikuri Uniwersiteti - STU) in Tbilisi Georgia and Transcaucasia, the largest technical university.

It was founded in 1922 as a polytechnic faculty of the Tbilisi State University. As Georgian Polytechnic Institute faculty in 1928 became an independent educational institution. The first rector was David Kandelaki. Depending on the changing political environment, it received new names: 1933 Trans Caucasian Industry Institute, 1936 Georgian Industrial Institute, 1947 SM Kirov Polytechnic Institute, 1956 finally VI Lenin Georgian Polytechnic Institute. In 1992, the Institute for the Georgian Technical University.

The university has 120 professors and 500 academic staff. They are working on nine faculties, in 38 research laboratories and centers, and the Polytechnic Institute in Batumi. The university includes an International German -speaking Institute of Economics and Law, as well as a French-speaking Institute of computer science.

Prior to 1990, the focus of the scientific work was the preliminary work for the defense industry of the Soviet Union in the fields of communication and mechanical engineering. Strong capacity were concentrated at the Institute for Cosmic construction and created for space laboratory for pressure and cryogenic engineering. Meanwhile, civil engineering, power engineering, telecommunications, architecture, mining, geology, technical chemistry, metallurgy, automotive, aviation and aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science and the humanities are taught.

Connected to the GTU are the Georgian University of Social Sciences, the Caucasus Business School and a Cisco Networking Academy.

A special attention is paid to the " German-speaking faculty of Economics and Law ", which was modeled after the Department of Business Law at the University of Lüneburg. The lectures will be held in German and have lured several students from Germany.
