GeoServer

GeoServer is a map server software. It is characterized by the conformity to standards of the Open Geospatial Consortium ( OGC) and implements the services Web Map Service (WMS ), Web Coverage Service (WCS ), Web Feature Service (WFS, and transactional) and Web Processing Service (WPS ). As a project of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation, the program is free software.

History

The project Free Feature Server, also FreeFS is absorbed into GeoServer.

Technology

In the development of GeoServer much emphasis is placed on compliance with open standards to enable interoperability with other applications. The server software is written in Java and is based on GeoTools.

GeoServer implements the WMS versions 1.1.1 and 1.3.0 and WFS / WFS-T 1.0.0, 1.1.0 and 2.0.0, where an extension with the versioning of the WFS-T is possible. Since the GeoServer version 1.5.0, the software also supports WCS, currently the versions 1.0.0 and 1.1.1. With the release of GeoServer 2.1.0 in May 2011 is, inter alia, also a WPS version 1.0.0 available as an extension.

For the storage of the tile graphics of a WMS GeoServer uses the Tile Cache GeoWebCache ( GWC ), the services thus created meet the standards TMS 1.0.0, WMS -C 1.1.1 and 1.0.0 WMTS.

Use

With GeoServer it is possible to offer geographic data as Web services ( Geoservices ) in a network, be it in a Local Area Network or the Internet. The display is using the WMS or WCS in the form of graphics or it will be using the WFS that the intrinsic characteristics such as output as GML. The included WFS has the Transactional extension (WFS -T), which makes it possible to edit the data offered and store.

In connection with a client applications can be created, with which one can consider existing map data. The functions (such as zooming, panning ) differ depending on the client. GeoServer can also be used in conjunction with a desktop GIS such as uDig, the individual services are used as a data base.
