Gerald B. Whitham

Gerald Beresford Whitham ( born December 13, 1927 in Halifax ( West Yorkshire ), † January 26, 2014 ) was a British- American applied mathematician, who dealt with hydrodynamics and wave motions.

Whitham received his doctorate in 1953 at the University of Manchester with James Lighthill. From 1959 he was at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and in 1962 at Caltech, where he built and Applied Mathematics with Professor of Applied Mathematics was the area (Charles Lee Powell Professor ).

In 1965 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society and in 1959 the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1980 he received the Norbert Wiener Prize.
