Gérard Buquet

Gérard Buquet (born 1954 ) is a French composer, conductor and tuba. He is considered one of the most important international tuba player who has introduced and developed new playing techniques on the tuba, especially in the field of contemporary music. In addition, he gains since the late nineties increasingly as a composer of contemporary music in importance. Buquet leads since 2000, the Ensemble for New Music of the Musikhochschule Karlsruhe and is professor of tuba at the Conservatoire de Paris.

Life

Gérard Buquet first studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Tuba Paris, and later composition with Claude Ballif and Franco Donatoni. He initially worked as an instrumentalist in numerous world premieres with the Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de France and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. During this time he was also active in a number of jazz groups.

From 1976 to 2001 he was the tuba player of the Ensemble Intercontemporain with which he was represented on all contemporary music festivals.

1999, a portrait film was made about him by the channel Mezzo TV.

In 2000 he was appointed professor at the Musikhochschule Karlsruhe and joined a professorship at as conductor of the contemporary music ensembles with which he rehearsed well-known works such as the Étude d'après Sérafin by Wolfgang Rihm. Since 2003 he teaches contemporary composition at Cefedem in Dijon.
