Germain Bazin

Germain Bazin (* September 24, 1901 in Suresnes, today: Département Hauts -de -Seine, France; † 2 May 1990 in Paris) was a French art historian, museum curator, professor and author.

Life

The son of an engineer Bazin studied art history at the Sorbonne in Paris, among others, Henri Focillon and Émile Mâle. In 1934 he went to the Université Libre de Bruxelles and in 1936 called to the Musée du Louvre in Paris, to work in painting and drawing department as conservator. During World War II he served in the infantry from 1939 to 1940 and rose to captain. From 1951 to 1976 he was head of paintings and drawings of the Louvre.

Teaching activities

Bazin was from 1971 to 1976 professor at York University in Toronto, Canada. He also taught from 1941 at the École du Louvre.
