German Coast

The German Coast ( Côte des Allemands in French) was a region located on the Mississippi River west of New Orleans. This part of Louisiana was due to the many German pioneers who settled here from 1768, this name. The majority of the settlers came from the Rhineland and Switzerland. Over time, the German -speaking population mixed with the Cajuns living there and took over the French language. Today, the term German Coast or Côte des Allemands is only very rarely used.
