German districts

The three municipal associations at the federal level in Germany, the German Association of Cities, the German County Association and the German cities and municipalities have joined together to facilitate and coordinate the associational cooperation with the Federal Association of the municipal associations. The leadership changes annually.

In the federal structure of the Federal Republic of Germany, the counties, cities and towns form the third level of public administrations. With federal and state they have in common that their decision-making takes place in people's representatives, who are elected by universal, direct, free, equal and secret elections. This situation also characterizes the work of the municipal associations.

The central task of the municipal associations is to promote the counties, cities and towns constitutional guarantee local self-government, to exchange experience and to bring the common interests of the local authorities towards the state and the public advantage.
