German Flood Service Medal

The use of flood relief medal in 2002 was donated on 20 September 2002 by joint decree of the then Federal Minister of the Interior Otto Schily and the then Federal Minister of Defence Peter Struck as a State award.

Purpose of the Foundation

The use of flood relief Medal 2002 was awarded in appreciation and in recognition of particularly selfless help in avoiding dangers and the repair of damage at the Elbe flood in August 2002. She could be awarded to both full-time and volunteer forces of the disaster relief organization, members of the Federal and the army as well as for third parties because of their special merits in cooperation with the THW, the Federal and the Bundeswehr.

Design of the medal and carrying method

The decorations in the shape of a round, silver-colored medal. It shows on its face the federal eagle in embossed marking. In a stylized tidal wave and half sunken house is shown. The circumferential nail line through the word in the lower part of the coin is interrupted FLOOD AID 2002. The reverse of the medal shows the centrally raised lettering: thanks and appreciation. The blue central part of the medal ribbon is edged black-red- gold on both sides of the Federal colors. The medal ribbon bar bears the colors of the medal ribbon and shows the center reduced patch miniature front page. It is supported medal ribbon decorations or rosette at the left upper chest. The rose window is decorated in the colors of the medal ribbon.

Awarding authority

The award of the Medal of Honour responsible for:

  • 2) the Federal Minister of Defence: to members of the Armed Forces, to foreign military personnel as well as to third parties who have collaborated with the German Armed Forces and foreign armed forces.

Award conditions

The decorations will be awarded for at least one entire day on site starting with the 8th August 2002 flood and flood disaster area along the Danube and Elbe and its tributaries. In exceptional cases, however, deviations are permitted.

Vorschlageberechtigung

The Vorschlageberechtigung responsible for:

  • A ) for members of the border police: the President of the Federal councils,
  • B ) for full-time and volunteer forces of the THW: the State Commissioner of the Federal Agency for Technical Relief through its President
  • C ) for third parties: be a coordinated manner between the authorities referred to letter a) and b).
  • D ) for members of the Armed Forces: the next disciplinary superiors,
  • E) for civilian members of the Armed Forces: a similar superior as in point d )

Suggestions for the award of the Medal of Honour of foreign military personnel as well as to third parties shall be submitted on the official channels to the Ministry of Defence. In addition, the Vorschlageberechtigten are obliged to check the fulfillment of the conditions ceremony itself, can be generously procedures in cases of doubt.

Method

The award proposals are then forwarded to list shaped by the Federal Ministry of the Interior or the Ministry of Defence with the following personal information:

All procedures regarding the award of the Medal of Honour will be kept confidential. The names of the award winners will be sent to the Vorschlageberechtigen enclosing the decorations and award certificates. This then causes the delivery of the award in a dignified manner.

Award

The Auszuzeichnende receives, besides the decorations yourself an award certificate with the signature of the Minister of the Interior or the Minister of Defence. In the deed the little seal of the covenant is to be seen. The decorations will become the property of Beliehenen with the award. It remains after his death, his survivors as souvenirs. A return obligation does not exist.

Others

The 2002 flood in the Federal Republic of Germany drew the largest disaster personnel use in non war times with it. Furthermore, other than the flood Medal of the numerous affected states have donated prizes for the volunteers of the flood of the century. These were:
