German women's ice hockey Bundesliga

The Hockey - Bundesliga is the highest ice hockey league of women in Germany. It exists since 1988 and is played single track since the 2006/07 season.

History

The two-tier Bundesliga (1988 to 2006)

The 1st Bundesliga was introduced for 1988/89 season, after only a final was played at the German championship with the best teams in the individual state associations before. The league was first played in two seasons, the North and the southern group. After the main round a final tournament followed for the championship.

Since the 2001/ 02 season, the DEB - Pokal is parallel to the ice hockey league played amongst women.

The single-track Bundesliga (since 2006)

On 1 April 2006 the introduction of a single-track women's Bundesliga for the season 2006 /07 was adopted by the majority of participants present at the meeting. The current strength is seven leagues clubs. The first table after the season is at the same time German champion.

As the spectators and sponsors encouragement of women's Bundesliga is still very low, all the players are amateurs. Due to the low budgets of the teams, many players have to take at least part of their travel expenses themselves.
