Gerrit Bol

Gerrit Bol ( * May 29, 1906 in Amsterdam, † 1989) was a Dutch mathematician who worked on geometry.

Bol doctorate in 1928 at the University of Leiden ( Vlakke Laguerre Meet customer level Laguerre geometry) with Willem van der Woude. He worked in the 1930s with Wilhelm Blaschke, University of Hamburg on the geometry of the tissue ( in this area are " Bol Loops " named after him, introduced into tissues and groups, 1937) and later on projective differential geometry, 1931 he was habilitated. In November 1933, Bol signed the confession of German professors to Adolf Hitler. Bol was in 1938 on the recommendation of Blaschke a lectureship in Freiburg, originally for the William Threlfall had been talking. Bol fought as a soldier in 1940 on the Dutch side and was German prisoner of war was released through the intercession Blaschke. He stayed with a three -year hiatus, as he was from 1942 to 1945 associate professor at the University of Greifswald, until his retirement in 1971 in Freiburg, Germany, in 1948 as a full professor.

His doctoral counts Martin Barner.

Gerrit Bol is the father of classical archaeologist Peter Cornelis Bol.
