Gert Heinrich Wollheim

Gert Heinrich Wollheim (born 11 September 1894 in Loschwitz in Dresden, † April 22, 1974 in New York ) was a painter of Expressionism.

Life

Gert Heinrich Wollheim was born the son of the machine manufacturer Heinrich Wollheim (1855-1927) and his wife Gertrud Wollheim ( 1867-1944 ). His older brother was the surgeon Hasso Heinrich Wollheim.

Wollheim was living in 1919 in an artist commune in the country. Together with Otto Pankok, whom he had met at the School of Art in Weimar, he wanted to establish an artists' colony in Remels ( Ostfriesland). The end of 1919 they both left and went to Remels Dusseldorf, where they the "New Rhineland " joined. Also included Max Ernst and Otto Dix to this grouping. In 1920 he became a member of the Artists' Association " The Young Rhineland " and editor and staff of the magazines " The activists fret ", "The Dude " ( after the art dealer Johanna Ey) and " Das junge Rheinland ", also co-founder of the workers' settlement ' Free Earth " in Dusseldorf -Eller. In the era of National Socialism, he was persecuted as a "degenerate artist ". He fled via Saarbrücken to Paris and later to Switzerland. In 1936 he was a co-founder of the " Free German artists covenant." In exile in Paris in 1937, he was one of the founders of the Artists' Association " L'union des artistes libres ". There he was also significant by Tatjana Barbakoff. In 1939 he was arrested, but escaped in 1942 and lived hidden in the Pyrenees.

Finally, in 1947 he succeeded with the help of the International Rescue Committee to emigrate to New York; Affidavitgeber was Leonhard Frank. He married there Mona Eisemann, nee Loeb. Groomsman was Leonhard Frank.
