Gertrude Kleinová

Gertrude Kleinová ( born August 13, 1918 in Brno, † February 19, 1975 ) was a Czech table tennis player. Before the Second World War, she was successful at the World Championships. She also appeared as Traute Kleinová and Trude Kleinová.

Life

Early coaches were aware of Kleinovás talent. She joined the club Maccabi Club. Her first notable success was the victory over the reigning national champion Marie Kettnerová in 1935. This led to her nomination for the World Cup.

Kleinová participated in the World Championships in 1935, 1936 and 1937. In 1935 she won along with Marie Kettnerová and Marie Šmídová the title with the Czechoslovakian women's team. 1936 defended Kleinová together with Kettnerová, Šmídová and Věra Votrubcová the team title with the ladies. In 1936, she was also world champion in mixed doubles with Miloslav Hamer.

Since 1939 Kleinová was married to Jacob scarf Inger. Because of her Jewish heritage, she was first brought together with her husband scarf Inger ghetto Terezin and to Auschwitz in December 1941. Unlike her husband, she survived and moved to the USA in 1946. In 1975, she died of cancer.

Owing to its success, she was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1994.
