Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda

Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda y Arteaga ( born March 23, 1814 Santa María de Puerto Príncipe, today Camagüey, Cuba, † February 1, 1873 in Madrid) was a Cuban or Spanish poet, dramatist and novelist.

Gómez de Avellaneda, daughter of the fleet commander of Cuba, lived alternately here and in Spain in 1840 and settled permanently in Madrid down. She published from here under the name " La Peregrina " numerous poems in Andalusian leaves, which appeared collected as POESIAS LIRICAS (1841 ). She also wrote a series of novels and short stories as

  • Dos mugeres (1842 )
  • Espatolino (1844 )
  • La baronesa de Joux (1844 )
  • Dolores ( 1843)

She made her stage debut took place in Madrid with the drama Leoncia (1840 ), which she initially the tragedies: Alfonso Muonio (1844 ) and El Príncipe de Viana ( 1844) was followed.

1846 married to the deputy Pedro Sabater, it was only a few months a widow, and she stayed away for a long time from public life. After they married in 1855 the princes and deputies Domingo Verdugo y Massieu, they lost that 1860 through the death and now retired to Madrid, where she died on 1 February 1873.

Among her later seals, which mainly have a painful and somewhat sinister character without outdone the previous formal beauty and richness of thought, are initially the biblical dramas

  • The song A la cruz ( 1850) and
  • El último acento di mi arpa ( 1850)

And the second, rich increased their output POESIAS LIRICAS (1850, two volumes) to call.

Later, she has turned almost exclusively and with great success of the theater and most of their dramas ( the whole 16) as

Others have been preserved on the Spanish stage.

Their last release was the Devocionario (1867 ) written in the monastery.
